Curious Facts About Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies was a huge success, both as a book and as a mini TV series in HBO. Between the captivating story that Liane Moriarty wrote and the driven performances by Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, Big Little Lies was an instant success. In fact, it was so successful that they’re making a second season, despite there not being a second bool. So, before we start binging the second season, let’s look at some curious facts about this instant hit:
  1. HBO won the rights to the series after beating Netflix in a bidding war.
  2. Nicole Kidman read the book overnight and fell in love with it, so she flew to Australia to talk to Liane Moriarty about purchasing the rights to it. She got them 48 hours later.
  3. The rights were bought by Kidman and Witherspoon with their respective production companies
  4. The novel sets the story in Australia but was changed to America in the series.
  5. In the book, Perry is described as looking like Tom Cruise, whereas in the show he is played by Alexander Skarsgard. Who does not, in fact, look like Tom Cruise.
  6. Madeleine, who is played by Reese Witherspoon, has a son in the book that does not appear in the show.
  7. Her affair, on the other hand, wasn’t in the books and was added on with Moriarty’s blessing
  8. Since there’s no second book, Moriarty is writing the script for the second season and wrote Meryl Streep’s character specifically for her.
  9. The inspiration for the book came when Moriarty was listening to an interview on the radio where a woman was recounting her parent's abusive relationship

Overall we can’t deny that this show and book had us on the edge of our seat from start to finish. Whilst we wait for the anticipated second season, we can always go back and read the book again. Feel free to check out Liane Moriarty’s book at our online library www.craveread.com.
