5 Halloween Costumes Inspired By Literary Characters

As Halloween looms closer, so does your last chance to get a good and original costume that will be a hit at parties. If you’re looking for inspiration, we might just be able to provide you with good costume ideas inspired by literary characters:

  • Creepy fairytales: before Disney decided to baby-proof fairytales and sugarcoat them with happy endings and musicals, they were actually very dark and creepy stories. In fact, if you read Charles Perrault's book of fairy tales you just might find them extremely unsettling and perfect inspiration for Halloween. You can dress up as your classical fairy tale characters like Cinderella or Little Red Riding Hood, but with a macabre twist. In fact, Perrault's books were filled with beautiful and frightening illustrations that might serve to fuel your creativity.
  • A runner: like most Young Adult books, The Maze Runner divides its characters into categories with ‘runner’ being the equivalent of Gryffindor. They’re the cool, athletic and fast protectors of the story, and they dress in badass post-apocalyptic attire. It might not be the scariest costume to pick, but it’s one of the easiest to make with what you have around you.
  • Dementors: probably one of the creepiest monsters you read about when you were younger, that gets scarier when you learn that J.K. Rowling based these creatures on depression and its ability to ‘drain the life’ of its victim. They would be a good costume option since you can also make it yourself.
  • Ghost: not just your white cloth with holes, but by reading books like ‘True Ghost Stories’ you might be inspired to dress up as a famous ghost and also learn new creepy ghost stories to break the ice at parties.
  • White Walker: with the final season of Game of Thrones approaching, it only seems logical that we consider the big villain of the saga as a costume. It might require a mask if you’re not willing to do the makeup yourself but overall, this costume will most likely be a memorable one.
